Do Not Ignore Consumer Court Order


SBI chief manager sentenced for one month imprisonment

BARNALA: Finding him disobeying its earlier orders and that of state commission of compensating a consumer, defrauded for Rs 40,000 at the bnank ATM despite alerting the bank officials, Barnala district consumer forum has sentenced State bank of India' Barnala branch chief manager simple imprisonment of one month. Bank has also been asked to pay Rs 5,000 to the consumer, which the bank authorities complied with immediately after the pronouncing of judgment on Monday evening. The sentence has been awarded for disobeying the orders of the state commission, where the bank' appeal was dismissed and bank official had been asked to obey the district forum order.
Surinder Kaur of Barnala on August 17, 2010 had gone to withdraw some amount at the ATM of SBI' Barnala branch. As she failed to withdraw the amount, a conman claiming a bank employee asked her to complete the transaction but fraudulently changed the card and left ATM. Seeing other consumers successfully transacting at the ATM, Surinder Kaur Approached the bank authorities and got to know that her card has been changed. As she requested for sealing of his account but authorities took extra time and in the meantime the conman withdrew Rs 40,000 in two installments from her account from some other ATM.
Deciding her case, Barnala forum had on February 10, 2011 had directed the bank authorities to pay Surinder Kaur Rs 40,000 and compensate her with Rs 5000 as fine. Upon the bank appealing against this order at state commission, the commission rejected bank appeal on March 14, 2012 and asked bank to pay to the consumer. The bank paid only Rs 23,300 but not the remaining amount. Upon it Surinder Kaur again approached the district forum on July 4 with contempt proceedings against bank officials. Taking up the case, the forum headed by president Sanjeev Dutt Sharma on Monday and member Karnail Singh sentenced one month simple imprisonment to SBI' Barnala main branch chief manager Paramjit Singh Sodhi. Forum also accepted the bail bond of Rs 50,000 with one surety of same amount whereas bank authorities deposited the fine amount of Rs 5,000.
Surinder Kaur said "she is waiting for the compensation since long and is satisfied with the orders". Bank authorities on its part said they will soon file appeal against the orders.
